Plant Stand Martin Brothers

Early Stoneware Pot Stand with Metal Rim and Feet 1878

Measuring 5 1/2 inches across ( 13.5 cm ). Very rare being produced and signed by Robert Wallace and dated 1878. Certainly a commissioned piece by someone who wanted to give a gift, maybe to “Her Ladyship” for a special vase of flowers cut from the Mansion’s flower gardens every morning. Robert Wallace actually made and then in addition designed an outer metal rim with ornate feet and then in turn had this manufactured by a local metal smith. A simple but at the time a very special and time consuming request. making this a very unique and personal piece and typical of the private clients they had.

incised: R.W. Martin Southall 1878

Provenance: Once owned by Rhys Morgan.
